Cycling has a broad appeal with everyone from toddlers to pensioners, able-bodied and people with disabilities, can all enjoy cycling if they have the right equipment. This would explain why cycling is the third most popular recreational activity in the UK. As with all physical activity, cycling has many benefits which include:

  • Builds strength and muscle tone
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness
  • Reduce your risk of health problems
  • Control or reduce weight
  • Reduces stress and improves mood
  • Can be used as a mode of transport - one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regualr exercise within your daily routine

Getting Started - Kit and Bike Checklist and Safety Tips

Before heading out on your bike ensure that you have the following:

  • It is important to wear a cycling helmet whenever you are on your bike
  • When riding your bike at night is it compulsary to have: a white front light, red rear light and reflector, amber/yellow pedal reflectors on the front and back of each pedal
  • Check that your brakes work
  • Ensure that you have a good knowledge of the highway code
  • Plan your route
  • Ensure that you are wearing appropriate clothes for the weather condition - high visability clothing must be worn when riding in the dark
  • Never wear headphones or use a mobile phone while cycling
  • Make sure that you plan your route and let someone know when you leave and where you are going
